The Villain The Villain

Reviews

As the Wikipedia description says with 100% accuracy, The Villain is a loony toons cartoon brought to life with Kirk Douglas laying elaborate diabolical plans that back-fire a la Wiley Coyote. (The loony toons theme music even plays at the end of the film.) Schwarzenegger plays the naive and inexperienced do-gooder that he was to reprise later in Twins, and Ann-Margaret plays a seductress. All parties turn in performances appropriate to the roles written for them. The best character and funniest acting is Douglas' horse, Whiskey. Not a lot of laughs, although I did get the giggles over the faux native name "Anxious Beaver." And there is an unintentionally hilarious story that Schwarzenegger (HS) tells Ann-Margaret (CJ). I have transcribed it below. What makes it so funny is the delivery. Schwarzenegger does act, he just recounts this anecdote in the exact same manner as he recounts anecdotes during interviews in Pumping Iron. If you know what I'm talking about, you can see how this comes off: HS: I saw a ho bunch of crazy hoses running down dah main street of dah town. And so I finally realized that, uh, these were runaways. And, uh, you know, so I jumped on my hose, and I chased them down dah street. As I ran after them, it was crazy. Their hooves were beating on the ground. They were going faster and faster. I was getting faster and faster catching up with them. And the problem really was that there were children, and women, and old men in danger on the street, you know. And I kept going faster, and it was really a dangerous situation, you know, and I tried to save them. CJ: So you risked your life to try to stop them? HS: Yeah, I mean, uh, I do this every day. I try to do the right thing, you know, and uh, uh... CJ: Oh, how wonderful! HS: So I kept running and running after them and finally I did catch up with them. If you are tempted to try this movie, don't read any other descriptions of it, especially the Wikipedia entry, as there is only one plot twist, and it can get spoiled easily.

It's good clean fun for everyone to watch. Been quite a while since I saw it last. Young and old will smile at this one.

One of the funniest westerns out there. And Ann Margret was hot as ever. This is kinda like watching the roadrunner and coyote in some of the funny parts. Very well done. Kirk Douglas was awesome in a comedy why did he wait so long to do one. And the Govenator was Ok and had his funny moments as well. Very clean comedy unlike movies today that have to have dirty words every other word just to be funny. Movie very well done.

the movie was in amazing shape and shipped very quickly, i am very pleased with this transaction:)

I saw this movie a few years ago and, honestly forgot about it. A recent revival in interest in the western genre and the current situation in the world leaving us all with a need for a few laughs brought it back to memory. It was obviously made in a more innocent time with an old, familiar theme....damsel in distress and the hero to the rescue. Kirk Douglas, hardly a comedic figure, and a young, naive Arnold Schwartzenegger are at their acting best. Anyone who is a fan of "The Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote"(and who isn't?)will roar with laughter as every scheme backfires on ole Kirk and "all's well that ends well".

The Comancheros The Comancheros

Reviews

Another great John Wayne western. These old westerns will never be lost cause they represent the old west as most of us really want it to be. I was a stuntman in those days and was lucky eough to work on this film.

this is the complete John Wayne moive, all the way from the gun fights to the larger than life screen apperance. its a must buy

I love John Wayne. He is here at his prime and he also got to direct that end parts of this classic movie. The Comancheros is a 1961 western film directed by Michael Curtiz and starring John Wayne and Stuart Whitman. When health troubles prevented Curtiz from finishing the film, Wayne directed the remainder of the movie, though his role remained uncredited. Curtiz died shortly after the film was completed. The supporting cast includes Lee Marvin, Jack Elam, and Edgar Buchanan. Also featured are western film veterans Bob Steele, Guinn "Big Boy" Williams, and Harry Carey, Jr. in uncredited supporting roles.Anachronisms: Although set in 1843 Texas, the characters all use Winchester lever action rifles and Colt Peacemaker pistols, which were not available until 1866 and 1873 respectively. The Guinn Williams character is said have stolen rifles from the army base at Fort Sill and to have served a sentence in the Yuma Territorial Prison, neither of which became operational until after the Civil War, 1869 and 1876 respectively. John Wayne and Stuart Whitman leave Galveston bound for the Louisiana border and immediately find themselves in desert-like surroundings with sandstone bluffs in the background. From Galveston to Louisiana the only thing they would have seen is canebrakes, grass prairies, live oak groves and piney woods. Whitman's character Paul Regret was the lead in the novel and Wayne's part had to be amplified for the film version. Wellman had envisioned Cary Grant as Regret as he wrote the novel. Michael Curtiz also directed The Adventures of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn and Casablanca with Humphrey Bogart. The Comancheros was his last film. Budd Boetticher was the first choice for director of the film but turned it down as he had previously worked for John Wayne's Batjac on Seven Men From Now and The Bullfighter and the Lady. Elmer Bernstein's theme music is heard in the Apocalypse Cow episode of The Simpsons when Bart drives a farm tractor

I've always been a John Wayne fan, although I'm not fanatic enough to think every movie he ever made was great. When you make 18 - 20 movies per decade there will be some clinkers. The Comancheros, though was not one of them. An above average John Wayne Western that never takes itself too seriously. Taking place before the Civil War, Wayne plays Texas Ranger Captain Jake Cutter who has been assigned to bring in a Louisiana Killer/Gambler named Paul Regret (portrayed well by Stuart Whitman) for extradition. Regret is able to escape, gets caught again, fights side-by-side with Cutter against an Indian attack, and ends up joining the Rangers, although being less than enthusiastic about it. He and Cutter then pose as gun runners to infiltrate a society of outlaws who have a very good working relationship with the Comanches. There are many twists and turns to enjoy throughout the movie, even if the ending is somewhat predictable. What makes this movie good is that the plot has both a serious and an easy-going side. Plus Wayne doesn't have to carry the movie. Whitman does a great job matching up to Wayne and even manages to steal a few scenes. Add to that a great cast. Besides Wayne & Whitman you have Lee Marvin as Crow, another gun-runner, Bruce Cabot as Major Henry, Cutters Commanding Officer, Ina Balin as Pilar - Regret's love interest, Nehemiah Persoff as her father and leader of the Comancheros, and Michael Ansara as Amelung, the second-in-command of the outlaws and want-to-be suitor of Pilar. One other great aspect of the movie, the wonderful music score by Elmer Bernstein. One of my favorites. I would recommend this to fans of 1960's western. Not too much violence but plenty of action, with just enough romance slipped in, it is a very entertaining film.

I am a John Wayne fan so it goes with out Quwstion that this was another great movie.

Many Rivers to Cross Many Rivers to Cross

Reviews

After seeing and enjoying this movie as a teenager, I was excited to learn that it was finally available to buy as a DVD. Once again, I enjoyed this film, especially Eleanor Parker, despite the unhappy feeling that Robert Taylor basically just walked through his role, exhibiting no real emotion, not really feeling the dialogue he was uttering. I thought the future Marshal Dillon, James Arness, did a better job with his small supporting role than did Taylor. And then of course there is Victor McLaglen of "The Quiet Man" fame doing his bit.

I had never seen this movie but I purchased it, based on all of the fine reviews. The story is very entertaining, great behind the scenes people (director, editor, etc). But I couldn't help getting the feeling that both Robert Taylor and Eleanor Powell felt awkward in these roles. First off, I think they were both too old for their parts. Don't get me wrong, now. I adore Eleanor Powell & she is one of the most beautiful actresses I ever saw. Her acting ability is top-notch (watch The Detective Story and you will agree.) I also enjoyed watching her in Scaramouche and The Naked Jungle (kind of a hokey story, but entertaining, nonetheless). Robert Taylor - well, he was always quite a handsome guy, made some really great movies. But in this one, they didn't seem to have the spark between them they had before (like in Valley of the Kings!) They did have a fling in real life, so maybe this film was toward the end of their relationship. I don't know - they just didn't fit right - neither one of them. But it is great family entertainment with some really good comedic lines. If you have never watched either of these stars in any other movies, you will love this one!

this movie was everything they said and more. If you like old time comedies, or muscials you gotta see this movie. They made great movies back then. I would buy this movie twice!!!

Heres a western that the whole family can enjoy good clean fun Taylor is as wooden as ever but is worn down by the beautifull co star great colour plenty of laughs this is a classic old western that should have a home in your home story is about a beautifull gal who has her hooks into taylor but he can't see thge wood for trees fun and games in the beautifull countryside with a handsome male lead and a beautifull leading lady William(al) watts Radio presenter australia

This movie is great fun for everyone in the family to watch together.. Movies like this leave you smiling after watching it.. not like most movies made today leaving you all tensed up.... I gave it 5 stars because I was entertained.... Good comedy moments and hostile Indians add to the action... ...Mary Cherne(Eleanor Parker)meets frontiersman Bushrod Gentry(the handsome Robert Taylor)and is determined to marry him and the more she pursues him the more he shys away... Excellent charactor actors Jim Arness, Victor Mclaughlin,Russ Tamblyn add to the cast.

Reviews

This latest Overstreet Guide is a significant improvement over earlier editions. Notably, many more point types from the Western USA are included. There's even a section on Alaska artifacts. Well done!

This was a gift for my husband for Christmas. He says it is a great book.

I purchased this book to identify some arrowheads that I received. Not to price them, but just to figure out what they are. It's actually conveniently broken down into regions, types, etc. It gives complete instructions on how to identify an arrowhead/primitive tool. That being said, I never did figure out what I have. It's like a bird identification book, the photos rarely match exactly what one sees. I'm not big into this hobby and I am a total novice. I would image once one has used the book frequently and masters the nomenclature it would be a very handy reference book. I just don't currently have the interest to thoroughly pursue it yet. For someone who is interested in the hobby, I think this would be a very useful tool. I might have given it a higher rating if I had gone right to the identification of my arrowheads. maybe I need Arrowhead Identification for Dummies?

Excellent reference for types and location. Photos of examples and construction of the book is greatly improved over earlier issues. While the price indications are still inflated, the information provided more than overcomes this single complaint. A must have for any lithic collector.

Paleo-Indian Artifacts Paleo-Indian Artifacts

Reviews

Finding lots of scrapers and an arrowhead on our property got my wife and I curious about who made these artifacts and when. This book is a fantastic resource for learning about how to classify Paleo-Indian artifacts and should definitely be in the library of anyone who wants to know more about them. It's slightly off-putting that the prices of many pieces are included, obviously catering to the proliferation of commercial interests. But that's a purely personal opinion. Excellent book! Buy it!

Being a collector of Indian artifacts and coming from a family of the same, I think this book is awesome. It is informative and, with the pictures and values given, makes a great resource for the information I was looking for. I had great fun looking up and matching the pictures to the artifacts that I had found in our area of Wyoming. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in artifacts.

I was completely dissapointed in this book. On the pro side: it has a lot of pretty pictures and is hardbound. That is about it. It has no technical merit, nor is there any organization to it. It is simply a mosaic of photographs many of which are subjective as to whether they are truley paleo or not, and they do not represent all paleo tools equally. You will have to work to find examples of redstones here. It may be suitable as a coffee table nicknack, but as a reference or good read....Zzzzzz.

Once the reader is able to get by the occasional editorial oversight, any serious student, artifact collector or just someone interested in Paleo-Indian/Native American artifacts will find this book an excellent and most enjoyable resource. It is both easy to read as well as full of pictures of these hard to find artifacts. Beautifully photographed...that in itself makes it worth sitting down and enjoying.

As previous critiquer noted there is an error in the book RIGHT OFF THE BAT! Could ANYONE have proofread this and missed it? It made me not trust the rest of the book, valid as it might be.

Arrowheads And Projectile Points (Identification & Values (Collector Books)) Arrowheads And Projectile Points (Identification & Values (Collector Books))

Reviews

This is a great book and very informative. THis book can be used by the novice or by an avid collector. Many useful articles and pictures. Very well illustrated and handy.

Good overall, although only basic pictures, simple text but get the point across. THis book is really the same for over a decade now, but has updated realistic prices. Lar did great and his son has done well since his passing. Good value price too.

Mr. Hothem puts together a book that is easy reading but I wish it had a section which showed exactly what characteristics designates certain points from each other (with a diagram). Otherwise, I found the book to be a nice companion book to other arrowhead books I have.

This 223 page's book is an excellent introduction to the world of prehistoric amerindian projectile points and arrowheads. In some very nice photos and inscriptions you could find the "keys" to what you collect, their relative prices, regional classification and chipping techniques. A simple and practical relation describes the U.S. materials used to make arrowheads and blades including all the regional types, edges, shapes, individual characteristics of each piece and instructions to take care with them. Indispensable to begginers and advanced collectors this book certainly attempt the amateur archaeologist's expectation.
